CAN I VISIT YOUR STUDIO TO TRY ON THE SAMPLES?
You’re very welcome to make an appointment to visit the Modern Love studio on the seafront in Worthing (approx 40 minute drive from Brighton) to view and try on sample dresses view fabric choices and colours and meet with me to discuss your design ideas and styling. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to book an appointment to view the collection in person, address details will be provided on request.
There are around 30 sample dresses to try on (the designs listed in the Etsy shop). The sample dresses are mainly a size 10/12, although a few pieces are available in a size 14. If the sample dresses aren’t you’re size then you may still find it useful to view the styles, colours and fabrics in person.
I recommend visiting several months in advance of your wedding - I don’t have a minimum ordering time, but please note that my diary is very full during wedding season. It’s a good idea to book early to view the collection and reserve your fitting date if you’d like to order a dress.
DO YOU MAKE BESPOKE DRESSES?
All of my made to order designs can be shaped to your preferences and its possible to blend together the different styles within my collection (e.g. the neckline from one dress, the skirt from a different dress, made in your preferred fabrics and colours) however I only make my own designs - I'm afraid I do not take commissions to make other people's designs and I do not offer garment copying.
WHAT ABOUT SIZING AND LENGTH?
Every made to order dress is made to your measurements - please see the measuring guide available here on the Modern Love website. When you visit the studio to try on sample dresses I will be able to take your measurements and answer and questions you have about style and fit.
I LOVE ONE OF YOUR DESIGNS, CAN I SLIGHTLY CHANGE THE STYLE?
Yes, all of my made to order dresses can be made bespoke to your preferences e.g. adding cap sleeves, changing the neckline style, adding or removing a puddle train. Please note that changes to designs may incur additional charges where more time and materials are required to make them.
CAN I CHANGE THE COLOUR AND MATERIAL?
Yes, This Modern Love partners with premium silk and lace suppliers based in the UK and Europe and can offer over 70 shades of matt duchess satin, crepe de chine, silk and chiffon together with over 40 different types of lace including raschel, guipiere, chantilly and corded lace. This Modern Love does not hold fabrics in stock, and therefore cannot send out samples. Please note that due to variations on display monitors/screens fabric shade cards should be used as guidance as opposed to an exact match. During your visit to view and try on the sample dresses you’ll be able to browse the fabric shade charts and lace sample books in person.
Please note that if you’d like a different TYPE of fabric or lace than the one listed in the description of the dress (i.e. you’d like ‘crepe de chine silk’ instead of ‘matt duchess satin’, or you’d like the ‘corded lace’ instead of the ‘guipiere lace’ the fabrics are priced differently. Please contact me to check the price prior to ordering as changing the type of material may incur an additional cost.
HOW MUCH ARE THE DRESSES?
This Modern Love made to order and bespoke bridal gowns start at £390 and range up to £900.
Made to order bridesmaid dresses start at £120.
The price of the dress depends on the cost of materials and the complexity of the design. The dress listings on Etsy are fully inclusive of the cost which includes the design, materials, making and fitting of the dress.
The dresses are all designed and handmade in the UK and will be fitted to you in person.
HOW DO I ORDER?
Please order your chosen style via the Etsy shop - payment is required in full prior to dresses being made; the price includes the design, materials, making and fitting - there are no additional costs.
If you’d like to change any detail of the design or materials please notify me prior to placing your order and I can create a custom order for you through Etsy, or I can send a personalised invoice.
STUDIO FITTING; HOW DOES IT WORK?
All made to order and bespoke designs can only be made with an in-person fitting at the Modern Love studio in Worthing. We’ll book the date of your fitting when you order your dress, so its a good idea to bring your diary to your viewing appointment should you wish to book a fitting date for your dress. Your chosen fabrics will then be ordered in and cut to your measurements ready for your fitting.
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE FITTING?
Your bridal fitting will take around 4-5 hours and your chosen dress will be cut and sewn together in pieces e.g. skirt, top, sleeves etc. During the fitting the separate pieces of your dres will be sewn together and fitted to your preferences, e.g. deciding on how loose or slim fit you’d like it, the position of the waist, whether empire line or at the natural waist, deciding on the length of sleeves, and adjusting the neckline and back to your preferences to ensure the correct fit, and the correct length of the dress.
Please ensure that you bring the underwear and shoes that you will wear on your wedding day (or as similar as possible).
Your dress is usually ready to take away with you on the same day at the end of your fitting. If there are any adjustments which will take longer than the fitting appointment then the dress will be sent to you as soon as possible following the fitting via Special Delivery.
WHEN SHOULD I HAVE MY FITTING APPOINTMENT?
I recommend having your fitting appointment 1 - 2 months before your wedding. My designs are relaxed fit which cinch in at the waist with elastic and I find that this work well in case there are any minor weight changes before the wedding. You can book your fitting date whenever is suitable for you, and we can check fitting date availability at your viewing appointment.
I’M NOT SURE WHICH DRESS I’D LIKE TO ORDER YET, CAN I PLACE A DEPOSIT TO SAVE A FITTING DATE?
Yes, if you’d like to order a bespoke dress but you’re not sure which style yet you’re welcome to place a deposit of £100 to reserve the fitting date for your dress. Please note that the deposit saves your fitting date and is non refundable. Should you no longer need your appointment your £100 deposit is redeemable against the ready to wear garments and kimonos in my Etsy store.
Please note that the balance of your dress is due prior to the materials being ordered and the fabrics being cut and sewn to your measurements ready for your fitting.
ARE THE DRESSES SUITABLE FOR MATERNITY?
Yes, because the dresses are a pull on, relaxed style they are suitable for pregnant brides and bridesmaids. Please let me know when visiting the studio and we can discuss current measurements and expected measurements for the date of the wedding - dresses for pregnant women are made with an empire line design (so they cinch in just under the bust rather than at the waist.) and extra fabric can be added to the skirt and around the bust to allow for growth.
WHAT ABOUT RETURNS?
Due to the bespoke nature of the dresses, made to order dresses and garments are non returnable & non refundable. Please bear this in mind when ordering. Every dress is made to order and is individually cut for you, therefore the made to order and bespoke garments are non returnable and non refundable. ‘This Modern Love’ accepts no responsibility for the wrong order being placed so please ensure all the details and measurement information is correct prior to placing your order.
Customers are advised to visit the ‘This Modern Love’ studio to view the styles of the dresses, the fabric shade cards and to view the fabrics in person prior to ordering, and to seek clarification if unsure on how to take measurements. Customers are also advised to consider whether the style of dress will suit them and their body shape prior to ordering, bearing in mind that the design of the dresses is a relaxed, informal style which pulls on and cinches in with elastic. The dresses are not formal, fitted or structured styles.
MADE TO ORDER KIMONOS ONLINE - FITTINGS AND ALTERATIONS
Every customer is entitled to one complimentary fitting with the purchase of each made to order kimono - a fitting involves a minor adjustment to improve the fit of the kimono, examples include adjusting the armholes and sleeves, taking in the side seams, or shortening the length.
Please note the relaxed, wrap around style of the kimonos - they are not designed to be close fit, structured or fitted in a formal style -therefore alterations cannot be made to alter the design of the kimono, only the size of it.
Please note that the kimonos cannot be altered to be made any larger or longer. They can only be altered to be made smaller or shorter - please bear this in mind when placing an order and taking your measurements. If you have ordered the dress too small or too short you will need to re-order a new kimono, incurring the full cost of re-ordering. If you’re unsure please do get in touch and I’m happy to help.
Customers are welcome to visit the Modern Love studio in person for a fitting, alternatively fittings can be done by post: please photograph the adjustment required and safety pin the excess amount of fabric to be adjusted. Please contact email@example.com prior to returning the dress. Alterations must be requested within 14 days of receipt of the kimono.
Customers are required to pay the postage cost to return the kimono to the Modern Love Studio, and This Modern Love will then pay the additional postage cost to return the dress to the Customer after the fitting adjustment has been carried out.
DO YOU MAKE FLOWER GIRLS’ DRESSES?
Yes, flower girl dresses are available bespoke in all of the same styles as the adults dresses (I recommend Mollie, Grace, Hollie, Bella and Belle bridesmaid styles), these start at £50 for children under 10. For children over 10, the dresses are the same price as the adult's dresses.
WHAT IF I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY DRESS?
All made to order dresses include a fitting in person where you’ll be very much involved in the design and making of the dress so if it’s not quite right during the fitting just let me know and your dress can be altered to fit.
If for any reason theres a problem with your dress following your fitting (e.g. weight loss prior to the wedding) please get in touch and I’m happy to help with a further alteration or adjustment to the dress. Please note that additional alterations following your fitting appointment may incur an additional cost.

As an exception, 'Ready to Wear' garments are refundable. Customers must notify firstname.lastname@example.org within 7 days of receipt of the 'Ready to Wear' dress to request a refund.
On receipt of the garment back at my studio (the garment must be unworn and in satisfactory condition) the Customer will be issued a refund in full via their method of payment. Please note that postage costs are not refundable.
Ready to Wear garments do not include a fitting or alteration - the garments are ready made and sold as seen. Customers may choose to have the dress altered with their local seamstress or dressmaker if necessary. Please note that any changes or alterations to the garment will render it non returnable.
