About 'This Modern Love'
‘This Modern Love’ is a collection of simple, romantic and feminine bridal wear, bridal lingerie and bridesmaid dresses made using beautiful fabrics such as silk chiffon, corded lace, guipiere lace and tulle. The dresses are designed in a delicate palette of neutrals and soft colours (though more colours are available).
Each dress is handmade to order near Brighton, UK with an 8 week turnaround. This allows brides and bridesmaids to choose the style, length and colour of their dress to perfectly compliment their wedding without compromising on quality.
Customers can choose from a variety of styles each listed in the ‘This Modern Love’ Etsy shop - e.g. ‘SIENNA’ - a guipiere lace bodice bridal gown with a full length ivory tulle skirt, ‘BELLE’ - a 1950's style prom dress with full circle skirt, worn with a petticoat, and ‘ELLA’ - an elegant lace shift dress with a cross over bodice. Customers can also choose to add details to suit their own preferences - e.g. cap sleeves, cross over necklines, round necklines, lace trims and grosgrain ribbon waist ties. Please note that changes to designs will incur additional charges where more time and materials are required to make them.
Dresses are made to each customer’s measurements - but they are not fitted/structured dresses. All of the dresses are simple, uncomplicated designs for a relaxed, informal style - they simply pull on and then cinch in at the waist with elastic. Please visit the online Etsy shop to see all the styles available.
How does ordering work?
There are three easy steps:
1. Choose your preferred style of dress
- Each listing in the Etsy shop names the style of a dress (e.g. ‘Sienna’ - an ivory bridal gown with a guipiere lace bodice and a full length tulle skirt)
2. Choose your preferred colour fabrics and lace
- I have a wide range of fabrics available, see the shade cards here on my website: http://www.thismodernlovebridal.com/fabrics-and-laces/
- You can choose from over 70 shades in silk chiffon, georgette and matt duchess satin to select the perfect colour for your wedding. I use beautiful laces such as corded, chantilly, guipiere and raschel and there are over 15 to choose from.
Please note that if you’d like a different TYPE of material or lace than the one listed (i.e. you’d like duchess satin instead of silk chiffon, or you’d like the ‘Eloise’ lace instead of the ‘guipiere’ lace - the fabrics are priced differently, please contact me to check the price prior to ordering.
3. Provide your measurements

Your dress will arrive in the post via first class delivery! I’ll let you know when it’s finished and on it’s way to you. You can follow me on social media for updates of what I’m working on, I usually post images of my work in progress!
Want something bespoke?
- You’re welcome to mix and match the different elements of my designs as well as different colours and fabrics to create something completely bespoke. Please contact me to discuss your design and to request a quote. Occasionally, there will not be a charge for changing the design, for example changing a cross over neckline to a scoop neckline - but please get in touch to check beforehand.
Can I visit your studio?
Yes! You are very welcome to visit the Modern Love studio near Brighton to view and try on sample dresses view fabric choices and colours and meet with me to discuss your design ideas. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to book an appointment to view the collection in person. ‘This Modern Love’ is also an online business - in fact many of my customers are overseas! Dresses can be ordered online and will be sent to you via first class recorded post. Dresses can be purchased via the online Etsy shop, and custom listings are available.
Please note that some of the more complex designs are only available via appointment to the This Modern Love studio. This will be clearly stated in the Etsy listing where applicable.
What about fittings?
Every customer is entitled to one complimentary fitting with the purchase of each made to order dress - a fitting involves a minor adjustment to improve the fit of the dress, examples include adjusting the armholes, taking in the side seams of the bodice or skirt, or shortening the shoulders to reduce gaping of the material. The dresses cannot be made any bigger or any longer during a fitting so please consider this carefully when measuring.
Customers are welcome to visit me in person for a fitting, alternatively fittings can be done by post: please photograph the adjustment required and ideally pin the excess amount of fabric to be adjusted. Contact email@example.com prior to returning the dress. Fittings must be requested within 14 days of receipt of the dress.
Customers are required to pay the postage cost to return the dress to the me, and I will then pay the additional postage cost to return the dress to the Customer after the fitting adjustment has been carried out.
What about alterations?
I recommend that the dresses are finished at least one month before the date of the wedding, to allow time for alterations in case they are required. There is a fee of £20 per dress if alterations are required to make the dresses smaller or shorter due to inaccurate measurements provided initially. Please note the relaxed, pull on style of the dresses - they are not designed to be close fit, structured or fitted in a formal style - they are a relaxed pull on design therefore alterations cannot be made to alter the design of the dress, only the size of it.
Please note that the dresses cannot be altered to be made any larger or longer. They can only be altered to be made smaller or shorter - please bear this in mind when placing an order and taking your measurements. If you have ordered the dress too small or too short you will need to re-order a new dress, incurring the full cost of re-ordering. If you’re unsure please do get in touch and I’m happy to help.
How much notice do you need?
A minimum of 8 weeks. Sometimes short notice orders can be accommodated - please ask about availability. I'm now taking bookings for weddings in 2017 and beyond.
Which colours are available?
‘This Modern Love’ partners with premium silk and lace suppliers based in the UK and Europe and can offer over 70 shades in silk chiffon, georgette and matt duchess satin together with over 15 different types of lace including raschel, guipiere and corded lace. I do not hold fabrics in stock and therefore cannot send samples. Please also note that due to variations on display monitors/screens the fabric shade cards pictured on the website (see ‘Fabrics and Laces’) should be used as guidance as opposed to an exact match.
If the colours/fabrics you have chosen are out of stock and unavailable then you will be offered a suitable alternative or given a full refund.
Can I have a different colour/fabric?
You are very welcome to provide your own fabric for your dresses - please contact me beforehand to ensure the correct type and amount is bought.
Do you make dresses for little girls too?
Yes I do, flower girl dresses are available bespoke in all of the same styles as the adults dresses, these start at £50 for children under 10. For children over 10, the dresses are the same price as the adult's dresses.
Do you make other styles of dress?
I offer bespoke designs but only if they are adaptations/variations of my own designs (i.e. changing the length or adding sleeves). I’m very happy to mix and match the different styles of my dresses to make a bespoke dress for you.
I'm afraid I do not take commissions to make other people's designs and I do not offer garment copying - I only make my own designs. I recommend looking on Gumtree for a local seamstress/designer to help with these types of projects.
Can I order one dress now and then order the other dresses later on?
I do not recommend this. Dresses are made to order and fabric is not held in stock - I cannot guarantee that if you order one dress now an another later on that the same shade of fabric will be available, and it’s possible that there will be variation in the colour from one roll to another.
Can I place a deposit to have my dresses made later on?
Yes, you can place a 50% deposit to purchase the materials for your dresses and to book my time to make your dresses later on. You may want to do this if you're wedding is more than 8 weeks away, or if bridesmaids are expecting to change size before your wedding (i.e. weight loss, or pregnancy). The remaining balance will be due prior to your dresses to be made - please give a minimum of 8 weeks notice prior to making the dresses. Please contact me to arrange an invoice if you would like to place a deposit to secure your order later on.
Can you send me a sample dress?
Yes, I can post a sample bridesmaid dress for you to try on and to see how the dress is made, as well as the colour and quality of the fabric and to try on the style of dress. Sample dresses are generally a size 10. I ask for a refundable deposit of the retail price of the dress plus postage. This service is not available for the bridal gowns.
Can I order dresses for pregnant bridesmaids?
Yes. As the dresses are a pull on, relaxed style they are often suitable for pregnant bridesmaids. Please let me know when ordering and we can discuss current measurements and expected measurements for the date of the wedding - dresses for pregnant women are made with an empire line design (so they cinch in just under the bust rather than at the waist.) and extra fabric can be added to the skirt and around the bust to allow for growth.
How does shipping work?
Each dress has a shipping profile set up on the online shop please visit my online shop for details. Customers will be liable for all shipping taxes where they are applicable.
What about returns?
Due to the bespoke nature of the dresses, made to order dresses and garments are non returnable & non refundable.
Please bear this in mind when ordering. Every dress is made to order and is individually cut for you, therefore none are returnable or refundable. ‘This Modern Love’ accepts no responsibility for the wrong order being placed so please ensure all the details and measurement information is correct prior to ordering.
Customers are strongly advised to visit the ‘This Modern Love’ studio to view fabric shade cards in person prior to ordering, and to seek clarification if unsure on how to take measurements. Customers are also advised to consider whether the style of dress will suit them and their body shape prior to ordering, bearing in mind that the design of the dresses is a relaxed, informal style which pulls on and cinches in with elastic. The dresses are not formal, fitted or structured styles. Customers are also encouraged to order a sample dress (see above) if they are unsure of the style or finish of the dress.
Ready to wear - refunds
As an exception, 'Ready to Wear' garments are refundable. Customers must notify firstname.lastname@example.org within 7 days of receipt of the 'Ready to Wear' dress to request a refund. On receipt of the garment (which must be unworn and in satisfactory condition) the Customer will be given a refund in full via their method of payment. Please note that postage costs are not refundable. This includes both postage to receive the garment as well as postage to return it to the Supplier.
